Dr. Michael Phelps enjoys challenges, is highly efficient and likes to help people -- three characteristics that make surgery a satisfying career fit
A board-certified surgeon with experience in general, advanced laparoscopic and hepatic surgical procedures, Dr. Phelps grew up in Emmetsburg, Iowa and earned his undergraduate and medical degrees in Iowa. He remained in Iowa to complete his residency and came to Davenport Surgical Group in 1994.
He still loves the variety general surgery brings each day and takes pride in the fact that he and his fellow DSG colleagues, possessing a breadth of advanced techniques and training, can be called upon to handle tough surgical situations. His niche is surgery of the pancreas and liver, two organs that can pose technical complexities during surgery.
"Liver surgery is a big, open operation. You might be helping patients with Stage 4 disease, and you have a chance to cure them," Dr. Phelps says. "The pancreas is an organ that some are reluctant to operate on because a lot of complications can occur; it's like trying to sew wet tissue paper at times. Cancer of the pancreas is a very devastating disease. Part of our job as surgeons is to educate patients about their disease and treatment options, so they can make informed choices on whether to have surgery or not."
Dr. Phelps is one of three DSG surgeons who perform bariatric surgery at Genesis, and in early 2011, did the 1,000th weight-loss procedure for the Genesis Center for Bariatric Surgery. He completed his bariatric surgery training at the University of Iowa, where Dr. Edward Mason was a pioneer in bariatric surgery. He is the current President of the Iowa Chapter of American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
Dr. Phelps also provides consultation and surgical services at the Kenneth H McKay Center for Breast Health.
Dr. Phelps' family includes his wife, Michele, and two grown children. He likes cars, has a 90-gallon saltwater fish tank in his office, wears colorful surgical hats and is known for his organizational skills at the office.
